MBCRE Statement on the Future of the Organization

The Minnesota Black Coalition for Racial Equity (MBCRE) will sunset on December 31, 2025. MBCRE’s remaining assets will establish the Black Economic Prosperity Endowment.  The Black Collective Foundation will serve as the steward of the endowment.
The endowment will continue MBCRE’s legacy through funding for research, programs, and advocate for policies. The goal of the endowment is to strengthen Black economic power, support self-determined institutions and businesses, and advance economic well-being.

Our Story

MBCRE was founded in 2020, in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, when more than 80 businesses came together to drive corporate action on racial equity across the state. Rising to meet that moment, MBCRE galvanized change, built partnerships, and stimulated dialogue. Five years later, the Advisory Council has determined it is time to close, leaving behind a record of advocacy—and a foundation for lasting change.

Our Accomplishments

Built unity and allyship within Minnesota’s business community by connecting leaders across sectors—from HR and DEI professionals to CEOs, managers, ERGs, and grantmakers—for a coordinated push toward racial equity. In a short time, MBCRE also helped champion key legislation such as the CROWN Act, expanding understanding of its importance for Minnesota’s workforce.

Seeded Black philanthropy through partnerships with the African American Leadership Forum and the Black Collective Foundation, amplifying voices and communities too often left unheard.

Trained and retained top talent through the C-Suite Series and three cohorts of the Minnesota Black Fellows Program, developed in collaboration with a Boston-based leadership partnership.

Expanded access to financial opportunity through collaboration with First Independence Bank on the Deposit Campaign, which generated $3 million in new deposits to support business loans and home mortgages in historically overlooked communities. MBCRE also partnered with TurnSignl, offering on-demand legal assistance to drivers of color—making roads safer for all and extending these resources to thousands of employees at MBCRE member companies.

In just five years, MBCRE transformed a moment of reckoning into a movement for lasting change. Its spirit endures in the partnerships, policies, and people continuing to shape Minnesota’s future.
